Breast Augmentation with Implants vs. Fat Transfer

Breast augmentation is often performed with implants but can also be done with fat transfer. This more natural breast augmentation option involves removing fat from another body area and injecting it into the breasts. Both types of procedures have their advantages and disadvantages. Implants typically provide a more significant size increase and are longer lasting, while fat transfer is less invasive but typically results in a more modest increase.

Breast Implant Types

If you choose to have implants for your breast augmentation, you will have multiple options for the size and shape of the implants to achieve your desired look. There are also different types of implants, the most common being silicone and saline.

Silicone and Gummy Bear Implants

Dr. Coville recommends silicone implants, which typically look and feel more natural. He prefers these implants made with medical-grade silicone for their safety and optimal results. Some firmer silicone implant types are called  “gummy bear” implants.

Saline Implants

Though Dr. Coville typically recommends silicone implants, he will also use saline-filled implants depending on the patient’s preferences and needs. Saline implants may be less expensive and require smaller incisions to insert. However, they are often more noticeable under the skin and may feel firmer than natural breasts. They are also prone to rupture and stretching out the skin over time due to the water within them. 

How are Breast Implants Placed?

Breast implant surgery may be performed with IV sedation or general anesthesia, typically taking about an hour. Dr. Coville will make inconspicuous incisions around the areola, under the breasts, or in the armpits. He then places the implants behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation with Implants?
