Breast Reduction
Have you finally decided to have breast reduction surgery after years of discomfort? Although planning for surgery is essential, you will also need to invest a great deal of time and attention in the recovery phase to get the best results.
It’s normal to have questions going into surgery, and many women often want to know how long recovery is likely to be.
At Cornerstone Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine, Dr. Fred Coville, MD, Plastic Surgeon, strives to answer all your questions so that you clearly understand what to expect during and after breast reduction surgery.
What is a Breast Reduction?
A breast reduction reduces the size of very large breasts by removing extra fat, glandular tissue, and skin. The goal of breast reduction is to make the breasts smaller, lighter, and more comfortable. The procedure also provides relief from the physical discomfort caused by the weight of your breasts.
How Long is Recovery from a Breast Reduction?
Full recovery from a breast reduction can take up to 6 weeks, but you should be able to return to work about two weeks after surgery if you have a desk job. You should limit activities during this time and avoid heavy lifting and pushing for at least 4 weeks.
Recovery after breast reduction is a multi-stage process, and it’s important to listen to your body and rest whenever you feel tired. It is also beneficial to include gentle walking in your daily routine to help promote blood flow.
Following all Dr. Coville’s post-surgical care instructions will help you enjoy a faster recovery period and achieve optimal results.
What to Expect During Recovery
Gauze dressings are applied to the incisions, and you will need to wear a surgical bra to help minimize swelling. A small drain tube may be inserted in each breast to drain away excess blood and fluids for the first few days.
You should feel well enough to move around within two days of surgery, but you will experience some pain and discomfort for about 1-2 weeks.
Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?
If you think your breasts are too big or they cause physical problems such as neck, back, or shoulder pain, breast reduction surgery may be right for you.
Everyone heals at a different rate, so it is essential to give your body time to recover effectively after breast reduction. Dr. Coville and the staff at Cornerstone Plastic Surgery are here to guide you to ensure your recovery goes well.
