Tummy Tuck
If you are considering tummy tuck surgery, chances are you are focused on the outcome and envision having a sculpted, toned tummy after surgery.
Although you are eagerly anticipating your new look, it’s also essential to know what to expect during recovery and how long it will take. This will allow you to make adequate preparations and ensure an efficient recovery.
Tummy Tuck Surgery
A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes loose skin and excess fat from the abdominal region and tightens the underlying muscles.
It is a popular procedure for people after significant weight loss. Many women also include a tummy tuck as part of a mommy makeover to address the abdominal changes that occur because of pregnancy and childbirth.
How Long is Recovery From a Tummy Tuck?
The recovery time after a tummy tuck varies for each patient based on factors such as general health, age, and the extent of the tummy tuck performed, i. e. a mini tummy tuck vs. a full tummy tuck. However, most patients recover fully after about 6 weeks.
We have noticed that patients in the good physical condition who exercise regularly tend to recover faster. Getting enough rest in the days immediately after surgery and closely following the post-op guidelines will also help speed up recovery.
Some patients can return to work as soon as two weeks after surgery, but those with physically demanding jobs may need up to 4 weeks off.
If you have any concerns about the speed of your recovery after tummy tuck surgery, we encourage you to talk to Dr. Coville about your concerns.
What To Expect During Recovery
You can expect to experience significant pain and swelling in the first week after tummy tuck surgery. Pain medication is prescribed, and this is usually enough to alleviate the pain.
If you are given temporary drain tubes to drain away excess fluid, these will be removed approximately 3 days after surgery. A compression garment is worn for about 6 weeks to reduce swelling and minimize the possibility of bumps or lumps developing.
You will receive instructions about showering and caring for your dressings and your drains.
It’s important to start walking soon after surgery, but the tightness and numbness in the abdominal region may prevent you from standing straight for the first few days. Patients can typically resume light activities and household chores about one week after surgery but should avoid strenuous exercise for at least 6 weeks.
Will I Have Scars After A Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure so you will have visible scars. If the scars are not fading as anticipated, there are treatments available to make them less noticeable. It can take anywhere from 9-12 months for scars to fade into thin lines after a tummy tuck.
