How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal
August 20, 2022
Laser Hair Removal
Shaving, waxing, and other hair removal treatments provide temporary relief from unwanted hair. Often only lasting a few days, they require more work and money than they are worth. Laser hair removal offers near-permanent results in 4-6 sessions. Preparation for your hair removal treatment is minimal and easy to follow.
What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal does not necessarily remove the hair. Instead, it targets the melanin in the hair with light energy. The light converts to heat, disabling the unwanted hair. Since it targets melanin, laser hair removal can only disable follicles in the active growth stage, meaning you will need multiple treatments to “remove” all hair.
At Cornerstone Plastic Surgery, we use the Cynosure Icon MaxR Laser and Intense Pulsed Light Systems by Palomar. These systems allow faster, more efficient hair removal for all skin types and tones.
How Should I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?
To prepare for laser hair removal, following all of Dr. Coville’s instructions is best. Some of the common recommendations include:
- Avoid direct sun exposure or any form of tanning
- No waxing or plucking before your appointment
- Do not take anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin
- Avoid anything that may irritate your skin
If you have an active skin infection or condition, you may need to wait until the condition clears before receiving laser hair removal.
What Does Laser Hair Removal Feel Like?
Laser hair removal takes under an hour, depending on the size of your treatment area. Dr. Coville slowly goes over your skin after adjusting the laser’s settings to your treatment needs. Most patients say the laser feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin.
For your comfort, the lasers have built-in cooling technology, and Dr. Coville may use an additional cooling jet called a Zimmer. These jets allow for a more relaxing treatment.
How Long Until I See Results with Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal requires no downtime, but temporarily avoiding exercise and direct sun exposure is best. Your skin will be more sensitive after your treatment.
Noticeable results may take up to 2 – 3 weeks and multiple sessions. Full results typically take 4-6 sessions. After your final appointment, the results are near-permanent, only requiring annual maintenance.
Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Anyone wanting to remove hair maintenance from their daily grooming routine is a good candidate for laser hair removal. While light skin with darker hair has the most satisfying results, newer technology allows all skin types and tones to enjoy the results of laser hair removal.
You may require an alternative hair removal treatment if you have blonde, red, gray, or white hair.
