What is Ear Pinning (Otoplasty)?

Ear Surgery
Protruding ears are a common concern, and they often start to bother children at an early age. Otoplasty or ear pinning repositions ears closer to the head. It can also correct the size or shape of your ears to make them more proportionate. This procedure can have dramatic effects on an individual’s self-confidence.
What is Ear Pinning (Otoplasty)?
Otoplasty is a procedure to correct the shape, position, or size of the ears. Many people want to reposition ears that protrude outward. Dr. Coville finds otoplasty a deeply satisfying procedure with life-changing results. Ear pinning can be performed on adults and children, with children often experiencing the greatest benefits. In addition to repositioning protruding ears, otoplasty can resize large ears or reshape abnormally shaped ears.
How Does Otoplasty Work?
Dr. Coville will discuss anesthesia options during your consultation. While he typically uses local anesthesia, some children or adults may prefer general anesthesia. During ear surgery, incisions are made behind the ears to reposition the ear cartilage. A small amount of cartilage may be removed. Unlike bone, cartilage can bend into a new position. Sutures will keep the ears in place while they heal.
What is Recovery Like After Ear Pinning?
You will go home after your procedure with a dressing around your head, which you will wear for several days. It protects your ears from injury and supports them as they heal. This will be replaced with a smaller headband-like bandage you will wear during the day and at night, then at night only, as you heal. Most people can return to work or school in less than a week. You will need to limit some physical activities for several weeks to avoid injuring your ears.
What Results Will I See After Otoplasty?
Your otoplasty results will be under a dressing for the first few days, but you will be able to see results immediately. You may have some swelling that takes a few weeks to resolve completely, but most people are extremely pleased with their results from the start. You can expect your ear-pinning results to last a lifetime. The cartilage in your ears will keep its new shape for the rest of your life, making otoplasty one of the longest-lasting, most effective plastic surgery procedures.
Am I a Good Candidate for Ear Pinning?
Only a consultation can determine whether you or your child are a good candidate for ear surgery. Ideal candidates have no major health issues and reasonable expectations. Dr. Coville has extensive experience working with children to help them understand what to expect throughout the procedure.
